GTA 6 Preload — How to Be Playing the Second It Unlocks

Preload is the difference between playing at midnight and waiting four hours. Here is when it opens, how to start it on PS5 and Xbox, and what goes wrong.

Launch night separates into two groups: people who preloaded and people watching a progress bar. Here is how to be in the first group.

When preload opens

Rockstar has not announced the exact preload window. Based on how major console releases work, expect it to open somewhere between 48 hours and 7 days before 19 November.

Digital pre-orders are what qualify you. If you bought a physical copy, preload does not apply — your install starts when the disc goes in, and you will still face a day-one patch download.

How to start it

PlayStation 5: A pre-ordered game appears in your library automatically. When preload opens, it usually begins downloading on its own if automatic downloads are enabled. To check: Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates → turn on Auto-Download. You can also go to the game in your library and start the download manually.

Xbox Series X|S: Pre-ordered games download automatically by default once preload opens. Verify under Settings → System → Updates → Keep my console up to date. The game will show as "Ready to install" or begin downloading.

On both, the game stays locked until the unlock moment regardless of how early the download finishes.

The three things that go wrong

Not enough space. This is the most common failure and the most avoidable. You need room for the download *and* the unpack, which can mean close to double the final install size. Check your free space the week before, not the night of.

Rest mode not configured. Downloads pause when the console fully powers off. On PS5, Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode → Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network. On Xbox, use the Sleep power mode rather than Energy Saver.

Assuming preload means ready. A day-one patch almost always lands separately, sometimes hours before unlock. Leave the console in rest mode overnight before launch so it downloads unattended.

Bandwidth reality

For a game in the 150–200 GB range:

  • 1 Gbps connection: roughly 30 minutes
  • 100 Mbps: around 4 hours
  • 25 Mbps: 15 hours or more

  • Those are ideal-condition figures. Launch-week CDN load is real, and speeds on the day itself are typically well below what you normally get. If your connection is on the slower end, starting preload the hour it opens genuinely matters.

    A note on accuracy

Exact preload timing and install size will be confirmed by Rockstar closer to release, usually via the Newswire and the storefront listing. We will update this page when those numbers are official rather than estimated.
