GTA 6 Weapons System — Everything We Know
Modular attachments, dual-wielding, degradation mechanics, and the return of the weapon wheel. Full breakdown.
Based on trailer footage and material from the 2022 development leak, GTA VI's weapons system appears to be the most involved in the series. Here is what the evidence actually supports — and what is being asserted without any.
Important framing: Rockstar has not published a weapons overview. Everything below is inference from footage, clearly separated from confirmed facts.
What is visible in trailers
These are things you can see, which makes them the most reliable claims available:
Modular attachments
The strongest evidence is for an attachment system more granular than GTA V's. Multiple weapons appear in trailer footage with visibly different optics and furniture.
What is reasonable to expect: attachment slots affecting both stats and visual appearance. Red Dead Redemption 2 already did a version of this with weapon degradation and customisation, and GTA VI is built by that team.
What is not confirmed: the number of slots, whether attachments are purchased or found, or whether they are weapon-specific.
Weapon degradation
This is the most contested claim circulating, and the evidence for it is weaker than the confidence with which it is usually stated.
The argument in favour: Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped a maintenance system where weapons fouled with use and needed cleaning. A studio that built that system might reuse it.
The argument against: RDR2's system suited a period setting where weapon maintenance was thematically appropriate. In a contemporary action game it risks being friction without flavour, and Rockstar has shown no footage of it.
Our position: plausible, unconfirmed, and treated as fact far too often.
Dual wielding
Trailer footage shows a character handling two pistols. Whether this is a player-controlled mechanic, a scripted cutscene moment, or a character-specific ability is genuinely unclear from the footage.
The weapon wheel
Expected to return in some form, given its presence across GTA V and RDR2. Some community analysis of trailer frames suggests an expanded category count. This is low-confidence frame reading, not information.
How to read weapons claims
The 2022 leak is the source of most specific weapon claims circulating. Remember two things about it: Rockstar confirmed the footage was genuine, and Rockstar also described it as early work-in-progress. Systems visible in development builds are routinely cut or rebuilt before release.
Our Weapons database labels every entry Confirmed, Rumoured or Speculation for exactly this reason.
