GTA 6 Performance Modes — What to Expect on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox

Will GTA 6 hit 60fps? What the hardware realistically allows, how Rockstar has handled this before, and why no one can give you a confirmed answer yet.

This is one of the most asked technical questions about GTA VI, and it is also one where no confirmed answer exists. Rockstar has not announced performance modes, frame rate targets or resolutions.

What we can do is set realistic expectations based on the hardware and on Rockstar's history.

What Rockstar has done before

Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped at 30fps on base PS4 and Xbox One, and never received a current-generation patch with a 60fps mode. That is notable — it suggests Rockstar prioritised visual fidelity over frame rate and did not treat a performance mode as essential.

GTA V's current-generation release did ship with multiple modes including a 60fps performance option. But that was a port of a 2013 game running on 2022 hardware, which is a dramatically easier technical problem than a new flagship title built to push that same hardware.

The realistic expectation

For a brand-new open-world game built to be visually ahead of anything the studio has shipped:

PS5 and Xbox Series X — the most likely outcome is a fidelity mode around 30fps and, if the engine allows it, a performance mode at 60fps with reduced resolution and settings. Whether the second mode exists at launch is genuinely uncertain.

Xbox Series S — the weakest of the current-generation machines. Expect lower resolution and the possibility of 30fps only. Series S has consistently been the constraint on ambitious current-gen titles.

PS5 Pro — the extra GPU headroom and upscaling hardware make a higher-quality 60fps mode more achievable here than on base hardware. If any console gets the best-looking 60fps option, it is this one.

To be clear: all of the above is informed expectation, not information.

Why 60fps is hard for this specific game

Frame rate is not a dial you turn. Hitting 60fps means every system — physics, AI, traffic, pedestrian simulation, streaming — has half the time budget per frame.

In a dense open world with large crowds and heavy traffic, the CPU side is frequently the bottleneck rather than the GPU. You cannot always solve that by dropping resolution, which is why some open-world games offer a performance mode that still struggles to hold its target.

If Rockstar has built Leonida with the crowd and traffic density the trailers suggest, a locked 60fps on base hardware is a serious engineering challenge.

What to ignore

Any article or video claiming confirmed GTA VI frame rates, resolutions or system requirements is fabricating them. These figures are typically finalised very late and announced close to launch, if at all.

When we will know

Rockstar typically details technical specifications in the final weeks before release, often through the Newswire or platform storefront listings. Independent analysis from digital foundry-style outlets arrives in the first days after launch and is usually the most reliable source for what the game actually does.

We will update this page when real figures exist.
