GTA 6 vs GTA 5 — Every Major Difference We Know About
Thirteen years separate them. Here is what has actually changed between GTA 5 and GTA 6 based on confirmed information and trailer evidence, not wishful thinking.
GTA V launched in September 2013. GTA VI launches in November 2026. Thirteen years between mainline entries is the longest gap in the series by a wide margin, and the differences are substantial.
Here is what is actually different, separated into what is confirmed and what is reasonable inference.
Setting
GTA V: Los Santos and Blaine County — a Southern California analogue spanning city, desert and mountains.
GTA VI: Leonida — a Florida analogue centred on Vice City, with wetlands, suburbs and an island chain.
This is a meaningful shift in texture, not just geography. Southern California gave GTA V arid landscapes and sprawl. Florida gives GTA VI water, humidity, dense vegetation and a very different architectural palette — Art Deco rather than modernist.
Protagonists
GTA V: three playable characters — Michael, Franklin and Trevor — switchable freely in the open world, each with a distinct special ability.
GTA VI: two playable characters — Lucia and Jason — presented as a couple rather than as uneasy criminal associates.
The structural change is more interesting than the count. GTA V's trio were bound together by circumstance and mutual suspicion. A couple is a fundamentally different relationship to write around, and Rockstar's own Bonnie and Clyde framing suggests a story where the central relationship is the point rather than the complication.
Lucia is also the first female playable protagonist in a mainline GTA, after more than two decades of the series.
Visual fidelity
This is the most visible difference and the easiest to verify from trailers.
GTA V was built for PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware and later remastered. GTA VI is built from the ground up for current-generation consoles with no previous-generation version holding it back.
What is visible in trailer footage: substantially denser crowds, dramatically improved lighting and reflections, far more detailed water simulation, and a level of environmental clutter that implies much higher memory budgets.
Scale and density
Trailer analysis suggests a notably larger world than GTA V's, though Rockstar has published no size figure and every specific number circulating is an estimate.
The more interesting claim is density rather than raw area. The footage implies more enterable interiors, which has historically been the limiting factor in how alive a GTA city feels.
What we do not know
Be wary of confident comparisons on these points, because none are confirmed:
The honest framing
GTA V was a technically ambitious game built against the ceiling of 2013 console hardware. GTA VI is being built by a studio that has since shipped Red Dead Redemption 2 — a game whose systemic detail and NPC behaviour set a different bar entirely.
If you want a prediction of GTA VI's design sensibility, RDR2 is the better reference point than GTA V. The team, the tools and the priorities have all moved on considerably since 2013.
